In the second post we started to do some considerations about the area of the project, having a look at the impact of the neighboring buildings on the area of the project. As we have seen, the situation in Via del Porto Fluviale, in the area of Ostiense, is particularity critical especially in summer period, since the project's area is at the end of the block and it's not surrounded by high buildings, except for the one in front of Via del Porto Fluviale. So the impact of the other buildings is irrelevant and the lack of vegetation doesn't contribute to the comfort. So let's we see how the situation changes with our project's proposal inside the area.

PROJECT'S PROPOSAL

From the begin, we have worked out with the idea of having a route between the buildings, which allow to the courtyard to be enjoyed not only by the residents of the project's building but also from others. We started with two singles buildings, which determined a single route, then we divide them in more units. So we got to divide the plant in a set of different heights and typologies' volumes: some linear buildings sign the open sides of the area, others more compacts are inside the area so that we can have a set of different spaces and courses. We have in total five volumes, from four to seven floors, with the ground floor reserved to commercial function.

SHADOWS AND SOLAR RADIATION ANALYSIS

We have done a study of shadows during equinox and solstice, at 12 am. ombre plan.jpg

Below, the solar radiation analysis during winter and summer period.

CONSIDERATIONS

Having more different open spaces and routes means also different solar conditions, so that people can choose where they can walk or having a break according to their demand. Moreover, still because the fragmentary of the plant, we have more shadow's zones than before during summer period, and this would be useful to characterize the open spaces (for example between vegetation and paving). We are going also to provide for add shelters and openings, which allow a bigger shady zone in the ground floor, reserved to commercial function; loggias and vegetation will provide to protect the upper floors. So we can see the alternation of sunny zones and shady zones inside the courtyard, even if we have to say that sunny zones in winter are a bit lacking. Another problem we had noticed is in the square in front of  Via dei Magazzini Generali in summer, because no buildings project their shadows in this area and this could be harmful for the livability during this period. On the contrary, the situation in this square is optimal during winter period, because the solar radiation allows to make use of this space.

Summer period, views from the courtyard: the project's buildings project their shadows in the area so we have sunny and shady zones.

Winter period, view from the square in front Via dei Magazzini Generali: the square is sunny so that it can take advantage of it also in this period.

I find interesting in particular, the perspective views.

Finally considerations at eye level, on quality of space, and light!
and of course radiation, and quality of comfort.

But all mixed. Great path of work, please keep it up as the design
advances!
