Trasimeno Square, Rome and Via Aslago, Bolzano Solar Radiation (work in progress)
1) Evaluation of our building in Trasimeno Square and analysis of solar radiation
First of all, we developed our model with the insert of more details, such as windows, balconies and indentations.
We decided to study only the South-East and South elevations. These are the facades more exposed to light, thus, we thought they would have been the more intresting to analyze.
The task was to analyze the solar radiation in different ways:
A) Evaluation of the open spaces sorrounding the building with the colour-based method. The questions are: is a specific place conforable in summer? Does it receive enough light during winter times? Does it present any sign of degradation, due to the lack of solar radiation? Comparing the data with photos.
B) Check of the quantity of solar radiation on the windows, with the number-based method. The questions is: is a specific windows well protected? Comparing with the result of the contribution of light on the inside.
C) Check of the quantity of solar radiation on opaque walls with the colour-based method. It is important to compare, also in this case, the data with photos showing the state of degradation.
A) Regarding the open spaces srrounding the building, we do not have specific courts or social public spaces, but we decided to analyze the area of the sidewalk oriented towards South-East, which we were afraid could be too warm in summer time. And the area around the privat garden situated on the left of the entrance portal, because we were concerned about the possibility of having not enough sun light, due to the fact that it is oriented towards South-West/West, with further vegetation that creates shadows.
Summer study
Winter study
Unfortunately for this delivery we forgot to model the ground floor plane in order to study the solar radiation of the open spaces sorrounding, we will continue working on it. In the meantime, we posted this images showing the solar radiation on the building realized with the command SOLAR RADIATION with the following details.

PRESETS: MULTY DAY SOLAR STUDY
SUMMER: 1/06/15-23/09/15
WINTER: 23/12/2014 - 20/03/2015

B) We used Vasari in order ot study how the solar radiation on windows is influenced by the presence of the threes. Our house in at the frist floor on the South-East facade and receive a lot of light on the inside. The only protection for the windows is in fact the presence of the vegetation, because they have no platforms that shades the glass.
Window 5th floor window 4th floor window 3rd floor window 2nd floor
window 1st floor
Analyzing the numeric data of solar radiation on windows we can understand how the windows of 4th,3rd and 2nd floor receive more solar radiation, instead the balcony of the attic shades the window of the 5th floor, in fact, we have lower values. The window of the first floor has also lower values, this is because of the shades of the threes.

balcony 2nd floor

Concerning the balconies, as we have revealed from the pictures of the degradated part, the balconies of 1st,2nd and 3rd floor are the once that receive less solar radiation, instead the upper one presents higher values of solar radiation and a perfect conservation state as you can see in the following pictures. Moreover, another thing that we can notice from these data is that the lowst value for each balcony is the one placed on the upper side of the window, obviously because this area is more protected by the balcony of the upper level.
C) Studying the pictures of the elevation of the building we have discovered several points of degradation, as it is shown in the following photos.
We have acknowledged that there are different point of degradation: the upper part of the portal and the balconies at the second and third level.
We had discovered this two black spots on the cream plaster of the wall directly above the cornice of the main door. Our first hypothesis was that the lower level of the building, where we find the door, receives less solar radiation than the upper levels, due to the presence of the threes. Moreover, the protruding cornice of the portal allows the rain water to remain there on its upper side, thus, the water penetrates into the wall plaster, ruining it and creating the black spots.
After the colour-based analysis with Vasari we found out that the value of solar radiation on the top of the portal are not so different if compared with the rest of the facade. Instead it reveals a lack of solar radiation on the two lateral sides of the portal, in fact, the main door is in a retreated position if compared with the basament, this causes quite persistent shadows in this points. Therefore we can say that our hypotesis was wrong, the degradation on the plaster is probably caused by the rain water that has difficulties to slide down and penetrates into the plaster, not caused by the lack of solar radiation.
We have found out that the balconies of the second and third floors present sign of degradation, instead the balconies situated in the same place but on at the upper floors do not present any sign of degradation. As it is shown in the picture the shadows of the threes reach the building only from the third floor and below, thus, we tried to verify with Vasari this particular condition.
The image exported from Vasari clearly depicts the situation we have revealed with the pictures. The balconies at the lower levels receive less solar radiation and this cause the degradation on their lower part.
2) Evaluation of the project area in Bolzano and schedule of surfaces at all storeys.
In order to evaluate our project area we imported in Vasari the model of the mountain, fundamental for our area, and the Rhino model of our frist project idea, we have studied the shadows on the area, but we had some problems to study the solar radiation with the rhino model, so we are still working on that, as for the schedule of the floors.
